But more importantly, when a friend was suffering depression, alongside the support she gained from friends and family, she also received a wealth of love and inspiration from the responses to her twitter hashtag #reasonstolive.
The courageous and eloquent Anna Grace Hopkins (@jellyjellyfish):
The genesis of #reasonstolive really came about when I was lying in bed, thinking very dark thoughts, and it occurred to me that I’d never seen all the episodes of The Middleman. I was like, “Well, I guess if I decide to live, even just a few weeks more, I’ll get to see all of the Middleman.” There I was, surrounded by loving family, supportive friends, in perfect physical health, and with lots of positive options for the future, but at that moment, I was so deeply unhappy that the ONLY thing helping me cope with the reality of being alive was the prospect of getting to watch a bit more of Wendy Watson. It was absurdly shallow. But it worked. I ended up asking on Twitter one day for reminders of more “reasons to live” and someone started to formalise the thoughts with the hashtag.
We did it every Thursday because that was the day that was loaded with the most unhappy memories. After a few weeks we started to have themes. Some people found it annoying – it could dominate a feed a little – but SO many people contacted me to talk about how it helped them. It was amazing and really heartening. It made me realize that we’re all just battling along through life and grabbing onto whatever floats past us to help us on the way.
I think the reason people responded to the idea that was the same one that kicked it off - that there’s no reason too small to live for. Yeah, sometimes it’s your parents or your partner or your kids, but there can be a lot of complications attached to those relationships too, and that can make focusing on them fraught sometimes. Things to do with your career or work responsibilities can also be loaded with stress, and “being grateful” that you live in a developed country or whatever only gets you so far. But nothing can take the shine off, like, how much you love that piano intro at the beginning of Skyfall by Adele. How totally awesome it was to watch Jonathan give Buffy the class protectors award at the Prom. What it looked like the first time you saw a cow give birth to a calf. The sound that a box of LEGO makes when it’s tipped on the floor. Eating marmite from the pot. These are all totally valid reasons to live.

Happy Birthday William Powell! | July 29, 1892 – March 5, 1984
I never enjoyed my work more than when I worked with William Powell. He was a brilliant actor, a delightful companion, a great friend and, above all, a true gentleman… He was and is a dear friend. - Myrna Loy
